It's funny to see his tone/attitude change from week to week. But he always sounds good.

Here we go....

August 30, 2010

Skylar writes:

It is a wonderful Oregon day today. We have been very bust this week in initiating the Collect the elect program. We are very excited to get it under way and are ready to work! we have had alot of canceled appointments this week. But we were able to teach James McCray. he grew up very close to the church and is very invested in discovering the truth. We know that as he searches Prayerfully and Diligently he will receive his witness.
This weekend we had a ward Beef and Corn feed at which we had about 10 less active families all with friends that we were able to meet with and are working toward getting them to take the discussions. This week we have taught Ashley Bales, Who has committed to quit smoking and drinking, as well as Aj who's parole officer (funny!) will be meeting with the Bishop soon to discuss arrangements for coming to church.
I Am in awe that Elder Hawkins is going home soon. he has taught me so much. His goal for these last few weeks is to finnish strong! We are busting tail harder and harder every day. he told me that i will have companions who will not want to work and who will make disobedience seem acceptable. I have complete confidence that he is preparing me to be diligent and obedient in whatever setting might approach me.
This week i have continued to strive to be more humble and submissive, to find ways to be more obedient, as well as have a more effective study and prayer. I have come a long way and have every intention of continuing to keep moving forward until i have become everything the lord has is store for me to be. In my studies of D&C 111 i have found that even though my past is to pt it lightly, "less than commendable" haha, the lord will put to my benefit as i have consecrated my efforts to the building up of his kingdom.
This week i was able to get Elder Hawkins to give me his scripture mastery cards. i have been memorizing about 2 a day. it is my goal to have them all down by the end of the year.

This was my letter to the president, jus thought it would summerize what was up.

In one e-mail I sent him I mentioned to him that another sister missionary from our ward serving in Idaho, Cambria Stradling, will be home in 10 days.....it really did go by fast...for us...her family has a different thought on that!!!

Ya thats fast! i met her trainer at the MTC She works there.

Dad sent a questionnaire and Skylar replied:

love you!!

How was your week? Great!
Anything new going on? Collect the elect! i wil send home a copy of the plan

We got your letter and Kasey love the note.
How are you doing with your companion, still going well I hope.
The camp out was fun but not the same without you. We'll have to get so camping in when you get back. For Sure!! Me and HAwkins are great! you get realy loopyy as the mission goes on. its like outer space!! haha just to put it simply!

It's been alittle cooler here the last few days, How about there? 70 and under its beautiful
Mom wants to know what she can throw in a box for you. Cheezeits, Teddy grams, Oreos save lifes!MAjic Barrs!!! the cokunut thingies (Auntie Cathy is on this one!)

She has been busy get all the things ready for the store so keep her in your prayers, she might go crazy. Will do!! I got to go to the temple this week, the protland one is so sweet! we all have to go when we get up here
I'm going to start the Book of Mormon again this week and I'm going to try to study all the church lessons ahead of time. AWESOME!! it will bless the fam so much. if you want a good study tool get a preach my gospel!! Ch. 3 helps me get things su much better. and i would recomend that you get a cheap one to write in. and have your good set blank so that you dont have other influences as you read! let me know what your finding in there. i would love to heare your insight.
How are your studies going? Any words that just stuck with you this week? This week DC 121 has realy helped me
Well I better get going or I'll procrastinate the day away, love you and hope you have a great week. I think this should be a better one
here, I know we are being blessed having you in the Lords service. Love ya Dad.

Skylar just sharing one of his e-mails:

August 30, 2010

Dear Elders and Sisters,

As we fasted today to begin "Collect the Elect", I pondered what each of you thought about as you partook of the sacrament. Perhaps, it was about the sacrifice for you and the personal peace that can come from daily repentance. Maybe it was about a renewed awareness of complete obedience so that our petitions to the Lord everyday at 7:00 a.m. will merit the blessings the Lord is willing to bestow if we but ask Him. And, finally, I considered the admonition of the Lord, "If ye do what I say, I am bound. If ye do not what I say, then ye have no promise." Action is inextricably attached to success; in this case it is keeping and honoring covenants and commandments. Do hard things! Honor your call! Be strong!

Mom & Dad write:

Grandma and Kasey loved their letter....

Dad was talking to Brother Davis (Eric) and just so you know...his father passed away this week. So, if you do get a hold of Josh...send your condolences about his grandpa.

Molly says that it takes FOREVER to get a letter from Josh and it's even worse with e-mail cuz no one has computers.....so don't feel bad....but I will get on that for you....

Kylee has Bo's address....ya somewhere.....Jana is mad because it's been 5 whole days and no letter yet!!! I'll make sure to get that to you...

What kind of "culture" are the people in your area? they sound "islandy"....is it like the Mexicans here and immigration and all? Like boat people being that close to the ocean???
Marshaleese....like the Marshall Islands???

Sorry you falled down. Did you get a Paul Blart? Need Hello Kitty band-aids???? ha ha ha

If you write to Onnie make sure you say Happy Birthday to Casen......and Pa's is coming up on the 5th....not like you don't have enough going on...but ya know...

How are the treats, rice crispy treats, and stuff making the trip? Are they fairing well or are they all yucky??? Let us know so we send the right stuff. Like OREO's...they'll get soft in the humidity.....

k - we love you! We're so proud of you! We're thankful for the blessing that have come our way since you've been serving!

Be safe!

Mom & Dad

Skylar replies:

i will tell josh that. and there is no half and half haha. you covenented one flesh, its to late to go back now. but ok mom haha. if it makes you feel better i could call the missionaries to come over. haha. i gave dad the list. its a 5 week month so we are going the ramen road. we get paid evey month and the extra wekk can kill haha. but its not that bad it just means that we need to think, uggg. i hate thinking, I am so ecited already to apply the things that i am learning when i get home. we all created post mission plans. i will be going to school starting after the christmas when i get home. i want a few months to save some cash for school and for a family. its weid to think about that though. we had dinner with a family in the ward, the moores, that have been married for less time than me and elder hawkins have been companions, and the are 20 and 22. i would probably hang out with them back at home. its weird to think that i am getting that old! tell kylee that she need to keep a list of all the new music and movies coming out.

Of course there is all kinds of support from the family. I know that we are all being blessed for your service to the people of Portland. We have had family home evening and family prayer and we have not missed a Sunday of going to church, so there might be hope for us yet. Is there anything that you need? We have a box to mail today that has a few goodies but let me know if there is something you can't go with out and will get it on it's way. I love you and am so proud of the man that you have become. Hey Elder, How are things.
Is the weather get cooler there yet? Its like the tropics here, we had rain on Saturday and it's so muggy.
How are you doing with your companion.
Are you eating well?
How is the Bike working out?
Do you have alot of ward refurals or is it just door to door?
how's your mission leader has he been replaced yet?
Are you able to get back to your peeps or are you just writing a few each week?

Been a pretty said week for the Castlegate ward. We had one return to our father in heaven this week. I'm not sure If you remember the Burrells, But Brycen was hit
By a car, He was 2. The funeral was said but one of the most uplifting that I have ever been to and you know I've seen my share. What a relief it is to know that they
Will get to see him again and be a family. Having a knowledge of our fathers plan helps with all aspects of life and death. On a Lighter note the ward campout is this week
And I'm so ready to get out of this heat. Bo and sis Anderson are in charge of it and I think It should be fun. Bo should be at the MTC and Josh has already been out a year, How
Time does fly. Hope all is going well, I miss you but am so proud to call you my son, and I know that your Father in Heaven feels the same. Tell your companion Hi for me and thanks
For putting up with you. Love you Sky have a great week and let me known if the is anything you need. By the way Did you get you card and get it activated so we can put some $ in it. Love Ya Dad.

August 23, 2010

Skylar replies:

Hey Guys. Bike is fine now. just some minor fixes. card is active and good to go. it started cooling down allot too. That's too bad about the burell boy but you have the right mind set. I haven't been able to get Hold of josh at all. i think at this point hes either not eating the mail or just ignoring it. IDK though. Things are going really good here. we are doing allot of tracking but are getting ready to start collect the elect witch is designed to get more members involved in the work. i fell off my bike 2 days ago but I'm all good. only my pride was hurt. haha. i rolled right out of it. Still getting fed every night and still gaining weight. thanks for tha satchel box. i am enjoying working out to music. FYI: there is only a few walmarts in all of the mission and they are all way out of the way. Same with sonic. i Luckly am Right next to one. but theres only 2 more in the entire mission. President dyches will be here until my year mark. Can you get me Bo's email and address so that i can talk with him please?

This week has been great. we have been teaching less than usual but we have been making them count. we have started teaching this marshalleese man named Richard Abo.
he trly has a desire to know the truth and he has been keeping all of his commitments. We have also been teaching Trini Areola. He has been taking the lessons for almost a year. He wants to be baptised but is very honest with himself and wont until he knows for asurety that these things are true. We have tried everything to help him feel that but nothing seems to be working. Dawna engleson has a simmilar situation. Only she knows these things are true but cannot quit smoking. She has recived many Blessings and has been praying dilligently. We think that we just need to focus on her testimony of the Atonment of Christ.
We have also been teacing Titus dewit and Aqua Tillman. Titus is a recent convert and Aqua is less- Active. They fight allot, usually leading to the cops being called. But we have seen the gospel change there family. they Seem to be fighting less and less and they are both looking happier every day.
I cant believe that Elder Hawkins is going home in 3 weeks. I am going to miss his example of obedience and diligence. But at the same time i am excited to change things up a little. I know that the lord has so much to teach me through the companions that i will have.
This week i had an experience that changed me. We were at a door talking to a minister for another church. He asked me what my title Elder ment. He told me that i eas not old or wise enough to have the title. Foolishly I answerd, trying not to offend him, "Elder is just a tiltle givent to missionaries who volenteer to serve." Afterwards Elder Hawkins rebuked me for being ashamed of my priesthood. So i went home and Studied out the priesthood. And through studying i came to know of the sacredness and the power and athority of my calling

well love you guys, stay strong and remember to do the simple things. they will give you the stranth you need to carry on. the gospel was designed to bring families closer together.
Love you lots!

It's Monday...you know what that means????

k - we were able to chat for a bit over several e-mails...so I'll post his one big one then summarize the others.....remember, he answers questions from other e-mails so his replies are all mixed up...I'll try to make sense of them if I can....SO random!

Here we go.....

We said:

Dad is asking: have you learned to fold those oragami shirts? He thinks you should have each companion that you have on your mission sign or write something on the
back of each one...and of course he bawls through it.....

then he replied:

haha. i will do that. with every companion we get matching ties at tjmacs and you sign them. those are what we call missionary thank you cards. you write the note on the back and leave it under you napkin at dinner appts. we have on eevery night so i make alot of them... ya i think that pamaroys jaket will be great so long as it has a hood. it has started to cool off finaly!!

In his main e-mail he writes:

yes!!! have you done the FHE yet. and i am dead serious about the reading!! and you and dad need to be going to the temple at least quarterly!! its just stupid to think its not nessisary. it absolutly is. i will keep sending home leason plans you just have to do it!! tis so important!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!.....um....i can look at it but cannot coment on it. i could but that would be disobidiant! funny to hear that from me i know, right! haha well i have changed! obidiance is the 1st law of heaven. i dont know how i could have wanted my life any other way! the sporot is so sweet. i have had so many worries this week about a job and house and all that stuff. but through prayer and study i revived personal rev. that i just need to worry about an eternal family and the lord will provide the rest. thats why we missionaries get married so soon! it the next step to exaltation.
Me and my Iss'enatha(russian for companion) (i think i spelt it right) have been getting along great. living with a companion has propared me to become a good husband and father. we have alot of gospel discores sessions. lots of deep stuff. like this: When egypians are buried, the ones who were considerd worthy of reciving heaven and had been through special cerimonies were burried dressed in white robes with whte sashes and a golden apron. WEIRD Right. well we looked in the scriptures and there is evidence in the old tes. about the gospel existing all civilizations to some degree.MIND BOGGLEINGGG!!!
Anyways, its really hard to get a pix of myself. but as thou wilt, the same shall be done. haha. umm..... Shantel got smacked hardcore with "anti" crap. so dissapointing. i will try more in november. gift cards:SONIC, BURGER KING<> hey you should tell kylee that i am sending her a letter. and hat i think she should serve a mission!! she would love it!! especially tell her that rms have a 40% higher acceptance chance at BYU's.. Just Sayn! well, love you guys. hope to here from you soon.

In a seperate e-mail I asked him when he thought he would be ready for his jacket....

ya Fred Myer is the place out here. (The same as Fry's here) but i get plenty of money for groceries. i will need the jacket witin the month. umm. if they send it to the office i get charged for it to be sent to me. unless it comes by usps. (Regular snail mail ya'll) that goes for all packages. we dont go to tjmaccs really. just for ties. but ya that would be cool. (I asked him if he wanted TJMaxx cards since they seem to buying lost of ties)

Aunt Onnie (JR's sister) sent him an e-mail

Are you eating well? I have gained 12 pounds
How often do you eat at member's homes? evry night
Have you told them how cool your Aunt Onnie is? evry day
Have you been to the temple in Oregon yet? yes but not inside yet
